Cosmo
Colleen "Cosmo" Murphy is unashamedly one of our favourite DJs. There are very few other people with the clubbing history, devotion to sound quality, and fabulous skills and taste as Cosmo. Since moving from New York to London around 2000 Cosmo has continued to build a reputation as a DJ of some note – with the all encompassing New York mindset of DJing with no limits, playing good music, no matter the style or genre, as long as it works on the floor and not being a slave to the beat.
Cosmo is also part of the promotion team that has established the quarterly London Loft parties with David Mancuso – in her days back in New York she was one of a very few people ever to have the privilege to play regularly at The Loft. Over the last couple of years she's taken on the mantle as the resident at the London parties since David is no longer able to travel. These are some of the most incredible parties that we've ever experienced - that is some accolade.
“She’s very devoted and very pure about the music. She’s one of the only people I would trust, both with the music and with the equipment, to fill in for me.”
David Mancuso, The Loft
She was also one of the few guests to play at the seminal Body & Soul nights alongside Joe Claussell, Francois K, and Danny Krivit. Indeed, she in held in such high regard by Francois K that she is one of the few DJs he trusts to play the entire night at his weekly Deep Space residency in New York.
Not content with promoting, DJing and hosting radio shows that are syndicated across the globe, Cosmo also runs her own record label Bitches Brew and has been producing some superb records under the Wild Rumpus alias; which finally sees the release of the long since finished album in the next few months. The label has also been an outlet for a 10" series of remixes for her DarkStarr colab with Ashley Beedle. Their remix of The Rapture's "Children" for DFA last summer was a big Melting Pot favourite!
If that's not all, Cosmo also found time in 2011 to revolutionise the way people listen to music with her Classic Album Sundays (CAS) events that encouraged people to listen to albums again in their entirety on some fabulous hifi systems. Taking the monthly concept to the Vintage and Bestival festivals plus a spectacular Red Bull Music Academy session in New York this year, with a David Bowie special that featured three of his record producers; including Chic's Nile Rodgers. CAS has garnered a whole host of media plaudits from the BBC, to the NME, Guardian, Telegraph, Cosmopolitan, and many more. Andrew has been hosting these events in Glasgow over the past two years to great success.
There aren't many others that share the true passion that Cosmo feels for the music she loves, and we can't wait for her to bless us with another magical performance before she heads off for her annual tour of Japan.
