Robots for Robots → General Hardware / Software Discussion → Roland's AIRA new 808 and 303 (TR-08, TB-03?)
prepare to be disappointed. clearly not a reissue. i'm guessing it uses numerous samples (triggered randomly) per drum to simulate analog behavior. so something like a non-customizable kontakt in a box.
As we can hear this is "next step" not 808 reissue. Roland's answer for Korg Volca? Let's wait for first demos.
it's the cornerstone of a new range apparently, so you could be right with the volca comparison. maybe it's the central sequencer & mixer for a collection of smaller modules?
I don't expect it to be an 808 reissue. I think they're more referring to the 808 style sequencer and the "cult" of the programmable rhythm machine that the 808 stands for. Maybe the new one will be able to emulate some 808 sounds, but it might be more than that actually.
I'm really hoping Roland get back in the game. They can't be blind to the success that Korg have had with the MS20 and the Volca's but looking at their previous product disasters I can't quite decide if they're arrogant or just ignorant.

"I must say that it was realy realy difficult to actualy program the 808... I have absolutely no idea how it works... it's not a tool easy to use by comparison to the tr-8" What? It's more difficult to learn to tie one's shoes than to get to know how to program a 808. And where are the percussion sounds? Next step? No percussion? Thats ridiculous.
where you can choose between 808 and 909 instruments percussion is also there as an alternative selection. clave/rimshot, cowbell/ride, conga/toms and maracas/clap
Good to know. But I have to make a decision as there are 11 instruments at the same pattern?
right, but this is mostly the same as with the original machines. the way this syncs with DAWs makes doubling up on those alternatives ridiculously easy.
I heard they also want to add 707 sounds later. In my opinion the machines are nice, and I think it's also fine that they prefer to make some progress in digital emulation, instead of re-releasing their analog legends. But to each his own; Korg seems to have a different focus and that's fine too.
