the promoter said:
I think that there must be a crackdown at Glasgow customs, as Skurge from UR wasn't allowed in for a gig on Friday and Francisco from Rome wasn't allowed out because he had a messy passport
and yes, my scottish father-in-law was shocked and laughed.
central services: better be careful because La Suisse isn't neither a Schengen treaty member nor part of the European Economic Area - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_A … chtenstein
I think that there must be a crackdown at Glasgow customs, as Skurge from UR wasn't allowed in for a gig on Friday and Francisco from Rome wasn't allowed out because he had a messy passport
But its definitely not the first time this has happened
.
but why do it in this official way with work permits etc? its a lot of hassle.. if we play anywhere outside our country and they ask questions (which almost never happens, except funny enough in glasgow and dublin) we always either go and jam in a friends studio (thats why the equipment is with us) or play at a friends birthday party or something like that.. never ever admit you are there to earn some cash, no matter how small it is... problem solved.
.
you can come in as a tourist, can't you?
.
ruud - so how the hell do you explain with a straight face to customs that you're flying in at 2pm on saturday and flying out at 8am the next morning?
"oh, i'm bringing all my equipment to jam for a few hours then leaving first thing in the morning" the red flags and alarm bells were a little too much this time.
let's just say that i didn't start out with my big mouth flapping. i've been touring for 10 years so i've got an idea of what to say and what not to say.
yeah its a shame dude, I heard the bad news when I arrived at the courtyard bar for the tickets. its pretty fucked man. hopefully ian gets you back and ill come up again
hm, so you do the ''leaving at 8 AM'' thing too there, ah? what's up with that airport there, does it close at noon?
i'm not in any way saying you're a clueless newbie.. however, it's entirely possible to do this kind of ''staying for a few hours'' thing.. people came over for the CBS party and left the next day. i have friends in germany who fly to the US for a wedding for one day.. they stayed less than 24 hours. point is, its up to them to prove you're there for something else, and they won't be able to do that.. unless they know our music scene, which is pretty unlikely. if you just come in as a tourist, so what if you have some equipment with you? you can even say you're performing on a showcase or something, or a label invited you, blah blah.. if you have a valid passport, they should have no reason to deny you entrance.
then again, some of those customs people do what thy want anyway..
no need to worry till the rubber glove appears
it was definitely NOT my choice to leave at that time the next day.
the issue is that they insisted on knowing all sorts of things about my "friend", and then phoning him.
after calling the guy, i then got bluffed and was told, "well he's got a different story than you - you're getting paid".
now it seems the onus is on the musician to prove they're NOT getting paid.
you can even say you're performing on a showcase or something, or a label invited you, blah blah.. if you have a valid passport, they should have no reason to deny you entrance.
Well some countries even if you claim to play for free want to see that on paper from some kind of official source, if you say something like you are invited by a label.
yes thats what usually say smile
i just thought there might be something weird as Swiss is kind out of all alliances or whatever,
but we've been in EU for almost 2 years now, so I guess I should be able to visit for 2 days....
Yeah shouldn't worry about that too much, they really don't care much at the swiss border, its almost the EU.
I can remember that we had a box of test pressings in the train once and the Swiss customs opened it and they thought they were some kind of bootlegs...(maybe it was edits police ;p )
Fortunately there was a sticker on the box saying what it was and they could read the text pressed in the vinyl.
.
Oh yeah I will send them to Bulgary
.
Ugh, how frustrating. I've always found that UK immigration is the most difficult of anywhere in the EU. I can never tell when or why they are going to give me grief when I enter. At least I've never ended up in immigration prison, though.
Think of it this way--you've just gotten a great story out of it. Taking one for the anecdote.
what strange experience, michel. now I know the meaning of the party thread: Secret Location Hope everything is well. Talk soon.
now I know the meaning of the party thread: Secret Location
i was thinking the same thing later.. it's all a promo stunt. the secret location was the prison all along.. sneak probably thought ''if it worked for johnny cash, it'll work for me''..
it's good to read that the experience did not have any other negative implications apart from being imprisoned. i had a similar experience in moscow on my way to central asia..at the end i got inspired to write a new song
yas - i don't remember you telling me about being detained! glad that turned out alright.
it was irritating, but of course i'm perfectly ok.
i'd much rather highlight the fact that asylum is a basic human right & that various people i spoke to are being held indefinitely. for many, deportation means they will face untold hardships, violence and even death. like the guy who may eventually be sent back to somalia. all they wanted was to have a chance.
one guy was trying to contact amnesty international but he doubted that he would ever get a reply simply because incoming mail is censored (this is stated in the Dungavel info-sheets that were shown to me before i was sent there).
(this is no new cause for me: i've been active in hard-left political action for 14 years now, which is why i'm so content to live in a anarchist, anti-fascist neighbourhood.)
ps. i was seriously hoping to play some music in the detention centre but they wouldn't give me access to my bags. instead i ended up singing lionel richie & billy ocean songs with some hindi guy (lol) and banging a bottle and making funny rhythms in the room with the africans.
it's also an unsolvable problem. on one hand asylum may be a basic human right, on the other hand there are only so many people a society can take up without major problems. only way to solve this is to make the situation in africa better, which isn't going to happen as long as most countries are run by dictators with deep pockets and high spending accounts.. its sad because most of those countries have the natural resources to be quite wealthy..
Do they give you decent snacks there? And can you drink beer or something or is that not allowed?
aye, nice....that's the famous scottish hospitality for ye My apologies to you michael.. on behalf of the nazi, fasicts, bureaucratic arsehole's that run our country.
Dungavel is a fairly controversial place, dawn raids, children & families and all get locked up there..it isn't right, as far as the whole asylum thing goes i agree with wat rude says.
it's also an unsolvable problem. on one hand asylum may be a basic human right, on the other hand there are only so many people a society can take up without major problems...
in an ideal world we could offer shelter to any & all...but i think you won't find too many people in here sympathetic to your noble cause. It's hard to care much about the poverty & hardship of others, when soo many people in this country have their own poverty issue's...one of the worst child poverty rates across all of Europe, some life expectancy lower than India. Is it wrong or xenophobic to want a goverment to put the well being of it's own citizens, before others....?
anyway..come back soon...we promise not to throw you out again
