Topic: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

Hi Guys

Anybody know how/if I can sync my 707 to logic so that Logic is the master and the 707 the slave? Have been trying all sorts of settings but no joy.

I don't want to just program the 707 in midi because I want to get the feel of the drum machine's internal sequencer.

I'm using a G3 Mac and Logic 4.7.3

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

in track play mode
press shift / Sync
there are 4 different modes you can see on the display in this order everytime you press -sync- again:
BPM# (internal) /  S-d /  S-t / S-n
you want to select S-n, it should sync if you send a midiclock (or midiclick)

if you already did this, maybe you're not sending the correct signal (timecode??) or maybe try another midi channel
some drum machines use receive channel 10 by default, but you can select any.

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

also make sure you go in your Logic project synchronization settings  and set midi clock out to the midi ports where your 707 is plugged in.

S-n is the setting on the 707 to sync to the midi clock like olivier8 says. If I'm not mistaken S-t is for the 707 to be played note on/off via midi.

edit: in that version of Logic the sync settings are not "by project" but system wise if I remember well, somewhere in the general sync prefs.

No, the 707 accepts midi notes as default, all you have to do is set the midi channel (shift + midi channel + button 1 / 16). It remembers the midi channel on the next start up. The S modes are all sync modes: St is tape sync, Sd is din sync and Sn is midi sync.

The 707 sends a din sync signal and a midi sync signal at the same time if you use the 707 as a master, which can e pretty handy if you have no midi to din sync converter.

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

Any one tried the Send midi not data 707 setting in song mode? Not tried it my self..

these three steps, in order, to program the 707 for MIDI Transmit Mode #2:

1. Enter Track Play Mode with the track not running.
2. While holding the Shift key down, push the MIDI Channel button, release it,
and, still holding down the shift key, press the Instrument Guide button. This
puts the TR-707 into MIDI Transmit Mode #1; we still need to get to MIDI
Transmit Mode #2, though.
3. Once again, hold down the Shift key and press the MIDI Channel button and
release it, but this time, while still holding down the Shift key, press the
Last Step button.

Now the TR-707 is in MIDI Transmit Mode #2. Press the Start key and notes
should appear in your sequencer..

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

I tried it once but it sucks to really make anything half decent with it. It's because you have to use song mode that it's really a pain to use. Even for programming simple midi drum patterns it's just too much work. A modern step sequencer, even the simplest and cheapest one like the Electribes are more fun.

I used to use that version of Emagic Logic but really struggling to remember where the midiclock settings were exactly, but pretty sure they're easy enough to find

Yeah you are right... got my wires crossed there.

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

Thanks for all your help fellas I'll let you know how I get on.

Yeah I don't get this.. the 909 can do it and it was released a few years before the 707.  Oh well, I guess the same can be said of the 606's ability to freely switch between write and play.  Would have been sweet if they kept rolling the nicest features forward.

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

Nope, no joy. I'm probably missing something glaringly obvious.

In Logic's Synchronization page  the options for sync mode are as follows.
General tab:
Intern
Midi Clock
MTC
Manual
Auto enable external sync

Midi tab:
Transmit Midi Clock;
Off
1 USB
2 USB
3n/a

Transmit MTC on/off

Not sure if I need to use Midi Clock or MTC? Also I have midi out from the Unitor amt8 going to midi in on the 707, is that correct?

I apologize in advance for being a numbskull.

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

Ok got it! Just set the midi channel to #4 and it started working. Thanks everybody.

One thing I have noticed though is that the sounds are a lot quieter when not being played through midi, not that this is a problem with the individual outs smile.

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

That is probably because you send the MIDI notes out with 127 velocity?

In the 707 itself it uses accent to make sounds louder

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

Of course, thank you Smackos. Sounding much better now.

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

So... Can I use 707 as a MIDI (clock from external sequencer) to DIN Sync converter?

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

yes in master mode it will send midiclick & sync signal

Re: Syncing the 707 to Logic????

Does the 707 recieve full range velocity? Also, has anyone had luck doing a bulk dump from the 707? Do i have to use tape (in that case, can I just go tape out into my computer?) out or can I do some sysx thing? I remember a thread about this before ..
