today I was going to get the cash for this:
But as soon as I discovered that it was lacking the sequencer and the guy wanted 20K euros I decided to leave the
money in the bank. But I was reaaaaaally close to it
PS: I know that with a whopping 14K $ I can get the bigger Synthesizers.com, but how many chances in your life to
be able to afford a '700 AND finding one as well?
I wouldn't pay 20k for the configuration you did mention.
And Synthesizers.com is nice but not that exciting.
In fact I did not pay 20K for it
Anyways, I know that you are a huge Buchla/Serge fan, so anything else will look like shit for you
The System 700 is great but 20K is to much paid i think.
My buddy got one together with my old Moog modular,
They are kinda from the same league but the Moog just sounds cooler imho.
But the 700 is much better designed with cv control etc but the filters are not that cool.
And both the 700 and Moog got bad VCA's.
look at steak and peters
ow ow ow
wow, where'd you score that Peters?
Craigs.
Got if from a very nice gentleman in the burbs who had it locked away for 20 years. He also had a polymoog for grabs but that turned into a bidding war and my friend and I barley had the funds for the P5.
Looks almost new, only problem is that the top 5 keys only work some of the time.
My previous experience with analog gear gave me no frame of reference for the sonic capabilities of this thing. Full, clean and powerful across every frequency. Honestly, I was planning on reselling it to buy more gear until I actually played it. Now I just have to sell some things to dig myself out of the debt, and maybe even get that retrofit.
P.S Anyone know why the cv/gate inputs are so quiet with a kenton prosolo?
i have to say that after visiting mono/poly's studio last weekend, the one i was most impressed with was the wiard. if i wnated a ''classic'' modular system i think the .com would still be my choice (value for money, looks, classic sounds) but if you want something a bit more adventurous, that thing is out of this world. superb combination of functions, the front panels and led's look absolutely gorgeous, and its not that expensive for what you get. the sounds and possibilities are very, very cool too..
oh, my aquired booty:
the lefthanded Johnson lefthanded fretless bass:
and thanks to mono/poly, the kawai R100. i'm looking for the CP2 sound chip for this thing (with the more industrial drum kit)..
Got an zoom 1204 yesterday... simple but nice.
@rude66 that bass looks sweeeeet. do you know what type of pickups are on it?
@ssm v3, where did you find that avatar at? looks really cool!
Thanks. I got it from the VSE forum, this kid was selling it (it was his uncle's who was in some 70s rock band I can't remember the name of) and he was based near me in London so I only had to pick it up from his dad. Its pretty sweet, like an oversized odyssey module.
My first band in seventh grade practiced in a basement full of the guitar player's dad's old 70's progressive band equipment. I remember scoffing at the Arp Odyssey because there was a plastic overlay that had "bass guitar" presets on it. All the while wondering why I couldn't get the punchy, fat funk bass sound out of my shitty danelectro ugly longhorn bass.
kind of funny on vintage synth they claim the avatar almost sunk the company. looks pretty awesome, esp since you can use it with both guitars and synths.
@honey peters, hilarious about the dan-o bass! haha, i can relate cause i bought one of those dan-o guitars in high school, so crappy. (tho i still have my nifty fifty amp, that thing is great!)
Yeah, I think it kind of did sink the company. Apparently the guitar pick up doesn't work that well, haven't tried it myself. Its also got a built in distortion/fuzzbox. You can et fully modded with patchpoints, new lfos and filters etc. so its basically a mini 2600 by sain eric ihttp://www.sainteric.eu/?q=node/8 but I kind of like it as it is at the moment since it came with all its original bits and pieces.
the bass is supposed to have EMG pickups, but they are ''Johnson EMG'''s. not sure if this means they are cheap copies or the real thing, but it plays nice.. of course i have not much to compare it to.. i can already play several new order and joy division basslines too, heh heh..
i was at saint eric's this weekend to deliver my poor arp axxe, and saw he had 3 avatars there.. nice machines!
could mean they are nicer than real EMG's, maybe have some custom wiring or something..
funny you mention it, when my wife got her mustang bass the first thing i did was start playing joy division and cure bass lines on it, maybe that's just like a standard go-to when breaking in a new bass?
@ssm v3, i'm curious what the distortion/fuzz sounds like on the avatar? you'll have to upload some files when you get it cranking!
hm, i never actually thought about the fact they could be better.. i was pleasantly surprised by the bass, it was cheap (150 euro, incl shipping from the UK and came in a very nice hard flightcase) but it plays well, has a very good finish and knobs, not at all like cheapo guitars i remember from the past. i'm still trying what the best way is to get that typical fretless singing sound out of it, but it already does the job now. my ultimate goals would be the sound of mick karn from japan/dalis car era, its funny that most fretless bass players use jaco pastorius as a reference but i don't like most of the stuff he did at all..though some is amazing.
i guess as a big new order/ jd fan and collector, for me it was natural to play these lines because i know them all so well. and they are easy.. there are some that use 90% open strings. but there's no way i can keep them up for 5 minutes though, especially not in a normal tempo..
have to try cure-lines though, thanks for the tip!

When I wanted to service/clean up my Avatar St.eric told me you have to take out the entire guitar part because sooner or later it will fuck up the enitre machine, now I don't know if that was some kind of "let me do it so I can make some money" scheme. But yeah that guitar thing never really works so you won't miss much (and in that 2600-style upgrade it also gets taken out, actually I think whatever you do with the Avatar and servicing there they take it out ; ) )
John Carpenter used these things too
yes, he told me the same thing when we were talking about the avatars.. apparantly there is some part in there responsible for the guitar pickup stuff, that isnt made anymore and goes bad on all of them, 100% guaranteed..
I got some EMS style patchmatrixes for diy purpose.
Thanks Ruud!
And i bought a Livewire Vulcan modulator.
@ Smackos and Rude66, Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to look into that. I kind of like it with the pick up and all since it came with all that shit, sort of collectors item. A testament to the folly of ARP. Anyway with the exchange rate being as screwed as it is I'm not in any hurry to get it over to saint eric's.
@screenvinylimage, I'll keep you posted, I think its just for the guitar pick up.
