Topic: dj krush, dj shadow, dj cam

.. Andy Smith from portishead and UNKLE (First incarnation) all made some excellent mixes. Do you have any to share? I am looking mainly for Andy Smith and early Unkle mixtapes :>

Re: dj krush, dj shadow, dj cam

Thanks dummy. That DJ Cam brings back memories...playing records from his ancient DJ Kicks mix - they sound a lot dustier and worn now haha.

Andy Smith sure has nice selections, but this mix is way too peppered with self promo...I'd love to hear what else youve got stashed

Re: dj krush, dj shadow, dj cam

ok man,...this ones much better, nice sound quality too

Re: dj krush, dj shadow, dj cam

Aye, rest assured the Portishead is mostly beats...and not vocal trip-hop pish, & i know you didn't ask for The Psychonauts...but trust me, that is the early Mo'Wax sound your after....these are all great mixes smile..

Re: dj krush, dj shadow, dj cam

What's this forum's stance on trip-hop with vocals? Back then, in the 90s, I was a big fan of stuff like Massive Attack, Crustation, Portishead...and I still like it. Massive Attack's Protection album was so great, sounds cheesy, but it must have been something like the soundtrack of my youth (o_O, o_O, o_O, o_O). Guilty pleasure? What do you think?

That whole "Chillout" concept was pretty big back then, wasn't it? "Chillout Zone" on MTV played all that stuff by Unkle, Massive Attack, Dj Shadow, Crustation...and I loved it. big_smile

Re: dj krush, dj shadow, dj cam

really? I missed that time...but I like instrumental hiphop and triphop too... Kruder & Dorfmeister, tosca and Thievery Corporation for example.

will check those mixes now, thanks for posting them!

Re: dj krush, dj shadow, dj cam

Thanks for those, lets rewind some years, nice.

I liked the Mad Professor vs Massive Attack Protection Album and enjoyed Blue Lines at the time, occasionally listen to it but for me Massive Attack quickly became coffee table fodder for a particular group of undergraduates, poncey, chattering class types and I can't help making that association with it now. Never really got into portishead, couldn't understand the appeal.

The Trip Hop stuff reminds me too much of a British TV show in the 90s called 'This Life' - a group of ex students, living together, steady week jobs (solictors, doctors etc) who enjoy weekend recreational drugs and shagging each other.

The roots of Massive Attack and Andy Smith's mixes are good. Protection and there later albums have aged really badly and have suffered from overkill/overplay.

Re: dj krush, dj shadow, dj cam

yeah, triphop was dead when i saw the first triphop magic music maker sample cd's in the store hehe.

but for portishead, i reaaally enjoyed there last album (third), after reading the soundonsound review i had nothing more than respect for them, real musicians who try to create.
