Vintagesynth.com is down, what pages do you use when you want info on some synth?
http://www.sonicstate.com/synth
http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews
both are better than vintagesynth IMO
a cropped selection but a mighty site
What he said!
also nice, no much infos but with links to more infos
The forums are my favorite part. Buying selling, blabbing. The info part is somewhat out of date and mostly rips off Peter Forrest's books which I always go to first.
The thing I don't like about these sites is most of the reviews fall into these categories.
-Person just got synth. Thinks it's the greatest thing in the universe. I'm guilty of having a few of these up there from my early days of synths I've since sold (Pearl Drum-X (still have two but very limited compared to Syncussion and underrated SC-40), Yamaha SY-1 (great 70s sound and portamento, some decent presets, but take filter off preset, everything sounds the same,) Waldorf Q (ultimately never liked the sound quality, my one and only foray into VA. Before I got it I wanted one more than anything in the universe because of said reviews.)
-Person just got synth. Doesn't know how to use it or has a defective unit so they call it a piece of garbage and give everything a one or a zero.
-Person paid crazy money for synth. So will not admit any shortcomings of synth. Even minor ones. If you spent $5000 on an ARP 2600 or Synthi or Serge would you tell everyone that it wasn't as great as you thought it would be?
But I still go to them before I buy something. Usually before I buy something I'll read a bunch of pages anyway.
Some reviews are informative and give cool tips and tricks. And 1/1000 is actually objective.
Some other good ones imo are
Deep Synthesis http://homepage.mac.com/synth_seal/html/index.html
and synthmania
http://www.synthmania.com
and http://www.synthmuseum.com/ is also nice but those other ones have mp3's of the presets or just demos so its nice to hear what the synths can do
Vintagesynths wasn't that good anyways outdated and very biased information for ravers circa 1998
Some other good ones imo are
Deep Synthesis http://homepage.mac.com/synth_seal/html/index.html
That one is really good, especially if you need info about fm and weird digital synths: not the best choice if you're looking for vintage analog synths. But there's Bluesynths for that.
edit:
http://www.sequencer.de/
that one is good too
all synths on vintagesynth were used by jimmy edgar
the original, and still the best!
http://machines.hyperreal.org/
:-)
aren't all the vintagesynth writeups copied on wikkipedia anyway?
Site is online again and updated.
when the hell are they gonna update bluesynths
