Re: I need a laptop.

Hmm not video..I want firewire for sound. I was told that 2 gig of Ram probably wouldn't be enough to run sound editing software and deal with the graphics card pulling memory for Os X. I was also told some horror stories about the graphic cards in the Pros burning out all the time.

Music is a beautiful opiate, if you don't take it too seriously.

Re: I need a laptop.

That's bullshit! Many people use white _first generation_ Macbooks succesfully to make awesome music. I do and I can add many many plug-ins and have dozens of 24 bit stereo tracks running. I don't really understand where do you need the graphics card power when making music?!? And the Macbooks graphics card can pull this off and much more. I don't really understand what it means 'to run sound editing software and deal with the graphics card pulling memory'. I know it works fine for me and seems to be pulling memory just fine!!! You clearly talked to a person who doesn't have a clue smile 2 gig is definitely enough for music.

Re: I need a laptop.

From what I understood the graphics card uses a lot of memory and this is what powers the interface Os X. So with that and the software etc it will probably need more memory. It was my boyfriend who told me this and he has been making music for some time. I'm not sure it's bullshit. But if I don't need to pay extra for more memory then that's great.

Re: I need a laptop.

He's right that the white Macbook's (at least first generation, don't know about the recent ones) use shared memory for the graphics card. But it doesn't affect the performance especially with 2gig of ram. And it doesn't take 'a lot' of memory, mere 64mb as default. We are not living in the 90s anymore, todays computers have much more ram than 256mb!

Naaaaaaah! Macbook is a modern computer and can deal with Os X graphical interface! It may take more memory than Windows XP gui (definitely not more than Vista) but it can deal with it easily. And with default 2gb of ram there's absolutely no slowing down because of the interface. And btw. you can turn off most of the animations etc in Os X if you are concerned about the performance loss because of the slick interface (I think the so called 'performance loss' is negligible anyway). Did your boyfriend make music on Os X? I don't think anybody who knows this platform can seriously claim that he can't make music on Mac because the interface is taking so much memory and slowing everything down. It's the first time I hear about it smile

And just for the kicks, for the first year I had only 1gig of ram on my Macbook. I still made awesome music and played live in the hippest of clubs so there you go!!!

If think you could be surprised how capable these white Maccies are...

But in the end it boils down to personal preference. I'm not  a Mac zealot although I seem to be one, Macs are not without problems either. Still, don't go with the cheapest pc laptop brand!

Re: I need a laptop.

And by the way, if you buy a pc and you're using firewire soundcard check that the laptop's firewire chipset is compatible with the sound card! This is really important, soundcards can be really picky about it, if it's the wrong one you get all sorts of issues from crackling to audio dropping out completely. I had this problem with my pc laptop... The Asus laptops for example use ricoh fw chipsets which are the worst of the worst.. One possibility in such case is to buy pcmcia firewire card with good chipset in it but still it might not solve the problem (the pcmcia controller might be bad too...)

Macbook WHITE/BLACK or Macbook Pro have good chipsets in it, the new aluminium unibody Macbooks do not have any firewire and so are basically useless for firewire audio interfaces. The new Macbook Pros have firewire800 and can be used with a firewire800 to firewire400 cable. One end is a firewire800 connector and the other end is a firewire400 connector. These will work with pretty much any firewire audio interface.

The rest is a gamble. I'm serious.

who wants to spend all morning configuring the bios or downloading another service pack. Fischer price maybe. But a better thought out invisible tool that gets the job done, for gods sake they even use the same chipsets now. Mac bashing is so 20th centuary.

Re: I need a laptop.

I bought a sony vaio some time ago just because I got a chance for a great price. They only had it with vista pre-installed. I asked for XP. They said we do not have authorized copies of XP for these new laptops, we'll install you a well-tested cracked one with all the drivers. And goddamn it I started getting blue screens about two months ago. Bitch.

Re: I need a laptop.

just as long it runs linux/bsd, the keyboard is durable and has long battery time. any suggestions? i've been wanting to check out those eeepc's. light weight and small size is a good thing aswell.

i've been writing some software for osx now and i'm not that impressed..

Monkey see, monkey do.

if you need more than a couple of minutes configuring bios (unless you are into overclocking) and downloading a service pack (which is 100% automatic). yeah then you should use a mac.
