on the pc I want to use these http://rekkerd.org/ronald-passion/
shit, then i can't help you... mac addict to the bone (and don't know shit about pc)
use cubase
wavosaur is a free editor that can host vstplugins. www.wavosaur.com
cool never saw that one before, checking it out right now!
Audacity is just weird. I mean it's cool that it's free but it's pretty confusing and then you have to get libs for every little thing. Reaper is the cheapest full-blown recording/sequencer and it has gotten a big user base in a small time. Mac and PC versions for $50 usd ftw.
Whats so great about that reaper program?
Is it able to do things that the other big ones aren't, or is it the interface that is intuitive to work with or what is it?
I've been using ableton for a few years now and am quite satisfied, eventhough theres a lot of things that annoys me a bit.
What made me choose Live was the pleasant looking interface and the quick learning curve. It was alot more digestable than the big ones (cubase, logic, etc..)
Now that Reaper is available for mac I consider checking is out.
Is reaper able to do sysex editing?
soundforge
Mayebe somebody who knows should answer the question instead
Ableton makes everybody sounds the same
computers and internet make everybody sound the same....
It can do sys-ex editing on a PC via a 3rd party add-on.

We've also discussed it here and Smackos was not that impressed.

Don't use vst's but ladspa and/or nyquist language.
If you just want to do simple 2 track (stereo mix) vst fx editing wavelab 5.x works good. You stack the vst's like a rack. You can hear the processing live. Then if you want to mixdown the fx with the recording you Render.
