Topic: What drumcomputer?

Hello Hello!

Im looking for a drumcomputer with a nice sounding (sampled) soundbank with various sounds.
Allready got alot of 'oldskool' drumomputers so no need for that.
Just want something else then the tr-X0X kinda sounds.
Maybe on of those alesis or whatever? 19" rack is also ok.

Any tips?

Thanx,
- Jonathan

Re: What drumcomputer?

How about an Es-1 fully loaded with your own samples?
If I had that I'd load it with of bunch of Goldbaby's excellent samples once and be done with it.
My friend has that and it's pretty cool, I love the sequencing on those.

Re: What drumcomputer?

I'd go with Tony, a ES1 (or ESX if you can spend more) will get you very far. If you don't need a sequencer at all, you could even have a look at an older rack sampler. A very basic one like a Akai S2000 or E-mu Esi 32 goes for almost nothing these days.

The korgs are nice, but i'm a bit uncertain about their timing. Doesn't seem to be very tight...
I have an ER-1 and worked with an ESX.

Re: What drumcomputer?

How about the native instruments maschine?
http://www.native-instruments.com/newre … /maschine/
Seem to have a lot of Bang for the Buck

+++ Dont be scared honey, thats just the resonance knob +++

Re: What drumcomputer?

yeah i'm wondering about maschine too. It is software-based though, even if the controller looks nice.

Re: What drumcomputer?

yup maschine looks quite cool, but i would like it to be stand alone too. Don't want to take a computer and the drummachine to a gig or whatever.

mmm, I m not sure but I was under the impression its stand alone too.....

yup, was my first impression too. Since it's being marketed very strong as being a drummachine/groovebox, i had to check the documentation a couple of times before i was sure it wasn't stand alone. I guess people today are so used to using laptop/computer that it doesn't matter to most.

Re: What drumcomputer?

You need a internal sequencer?

I just got me again a Roland R8m, 1U HE 19", lots a good kicks//snares/toms andso. Its somehow comparable with tr707/tr727 (most of the sounds are in it or sound very similar) andso...It sounds great imo, but I guesss you know about the Roland R8 series already smile

Native Instruments drums I am not so fond of, it doesnt have that sound like a real drumrompler, although much is relying on the sourcesample material, I think that in a busy mix it doesnt hold, but thats my opinion, and maybe the Machine's audio-engine is better of that of Kontakt/Battery III

There arent much 19inch Drumsources besides the jomox airbase99, Drum/DStations and so, and they all focus on analogue TR sounds of the 808/909 series. A basic R8m has a lot of 80/90s digidrums onboard

Alesis DM4/DM5 is not much seen in electronic studio enviroments I think, I dont know much guys who have one, and the reviews arent that cheerful also..but thats personal taste I think.

There is also EMU Procussion module.

Re: What drumcomputer?

kawai XD-5 is kinda interesting.
it's the K4 synth engine loaded up with drum/percussion waveforms and presets..
It would suck as your only drum sound source, but it has some cool noises, and lots of fun programming options.

another one to look for is yamaha RM-50 - it's similar to the RY-30, but no sequencer, a 1u rack, a bunch of individual outs, and about 10 trigger ins....

Re: What drumcomputer?

For now I think Im gonna buy the Roland R-8. Seems like a cool machine with the soundcards. Maybe those Electribes are nice but somehow the scare me off. Maybe its just the design. Might just buy an mpc again and pump it full with samples.
Still if you have any suggestions....

Re: What drumcomputer?

yea, get a mpc.

Re: What drumcomputer?

Electribe's are way better then the R8 imo, there is nothing scary about them, they work lightyears easier and faster then the old R8 which is a bit of a pain in the ass (and has way worser MIDI timing) I never had problems with timing on the electribes. Don't get the ER though but the ES super shuffly zompige drummachine. There are 2 designs of them the newer one looks a bit nicer. Never used my MPC again since I got those things.

Re: What drumcomputer?

you guys make me confused.
I think ill just try one of those electribes just to check.
Its just that I worked like twice on such a machine like 5 years ago one of the 1st in the ER series I believe.
And it was a lot of stuff under one knob and shit. And the candybar design annoyed me. However they problaby improved by now. Will check one out then cause the mpc is workflow wise not my cup of tea.

Re: What drumcomputer?

i almost got an electribe because of this vid
dont you just love that ribbon action?

however ableton and w30 are plenty for me smile

Re: What drumcomputer?

i still have an xd-5 i'm not using much.. i'm, willing to trade for something cool..

its a cool machine, a bitch to program but 6 outs plus stereo outs, very nice for electro-type sounds..

Re: What drumcomputer?

@ poodle: thats a damn fine demo.
@ rude: bitch to program sounds like a no no.

Re: What drumcomputer?

checked some demo's of EMX and ESX-1. Sounds nice. And working on it seems easy. Can I Control external synths with the sequencer of ESX-1?

Re: What drumcomputer?

Seems in line with this topic but was probably discussed here already:

Re: What drumcomputer?

we'll be old men by the time that thing gets released.  smile

Re: What drumcomputer?

And by that time every imaginable drum pattern will have been released on vinyl

best thing comes to those who wait................... a long fucking time ime guessing

Re: What drumcomputer?

ES(x) is definitely nice considering manipulation options etc. but beware of the timing, it doesn't run tight.
you can hear this in the syncom data 'data leak' remix, esx vs. 808.

i'm not sure if the timing is bettr of worse that the r8, but it's been a while since i've used my r-8. i can't remember any problem, but my standards may have changed.

getting back to an MPC is also an option depending on what you want.
supertight drummachine/sampler => MPC
less tight, more manipulation => korg

yes you can.
You can assign each of the 5 synth parts to a seperate midi channel

Dancin' for freaks and fame!
