Topic: novation remote SL - any good?

I see the basic idea, and like what they promise, but not sure about how well it works in reality. Has anyone here had any experience with these controllers and the automap software? (PC not mac, if that's a consideration)

I like the idea of using it when I do mixdowns in cubase SX3 and ableton live 6... If it works as good as they say, I might also finally have a way to dive into softsynths and try them out a bit more seriously than I have before.

Re: novation remote SL - any good?

the one i tested here did not work at all. nice idea, but it failed to recognize 1/2 of my software and what it recognized, it mapped totally wrong. the controller itself feels very nice but is pretty heavy..

Re: novation remote SL - any good?

damn... yeah I read a few negative things about it not always working.
not good that someone with strong tech skills like you couldn't make it do what you wanted...

I'm extra scared, cause I'll be using it with random/free softsynths if I get one... not the usual supported things. though at least cubase and live plugins are pretty common, and more likely than other things to work, I guess???

so...does anyone on here have any happy stories? what do you use it with?

Re: novation remote SL - any good?

I have a Remote Sl 37.

The keys are nice, which is rare these days on MIDI controllers.
I'm not using Automap universal, just the controller on preset 40 with Live 8, on a pc.

Except for the right side volumes, mutes, record and start/stop, I don't really use the controller part but I can say it doesn't feel like high-quality at all.

I had to get the panel changed because the silkscreen was just rubbing off by looking at it.  They agreed to do it but it came back reassembled a little sloppy.

I'm not sure I'd recommend it, but if there was a better alternative for a compact keyboard and controller, I would have switched to that.

Re: novation remote SL - any good?

The Novations are great bang for the buck, but the build quality sucks ass. but by far better integration than any other controler on the market. Automap 3 is very good and works with all the software I have (bought and shall we say acquired?). Just have to put a little work in.

+++ Dont be scared honey, thats just the resonance knob +++

that

Re: novation remote SL - any good?

but the whole point of the automap stuff is that you dont have to do that work anymore. thats its selling point.. any controller can be mapped to anything if its midi. ive regularly used dj mixers or cd players i tested here as midi controllers because they can double in that function, but you have to program everything yourself. no bog deal if you know that.. but if a company tells you stuff is recognized automatically and it doesn't even recognize my cubase or ableton live and totally screws up on the functions for some softsynths it does recognize, then whats the point?

Re: novation remote SL - any good?

Is it compatible with the Roland MT32?

Re: novation remote SL - any good?

You know - if I had to spend 10 minutes with each new bit of software (not that I have that many things anyway) setting it to work with automap, and then it always worked after I spent that time, then I'd be happy enough....

I really love the idea of a control surface that can take over screen controls and display the control names on its surface next to the actual physical controls they're mapped to.

so - how much work to get ableton 6 up and runnning?

how much work to get cubase SX3 up and running?

I don't have any softsynths at the moment, but how much time to get a couple of pages of controls in the remote SL setup for one of those?

Re: novation remote SL - any good?

ableton = not much time at all, probably the most intuitive midi mapping function around.
cubase = slightly longer considering it's probably tucked away in some sub menu somewhere.

either way, it's not exactly a daunting undertaking. a bit tedious perhaps but only needs the doing once.
