Topic: Electronic Music Club

Just started an Electronic Music Club at the Middle School (10-13 year olds) I work at. This friday the kids are going to be listening to Kraftwerk, Galaxy Toobin, Legowelt, Bernard Fevre, Lindstrom and Odessa.

I am looking for suggestions for other stuff to play them, Age appropriate youtube clips (no foul language sad ) and music-making websites like iNudge and hobnox audiotool. Thx

awesome idea marco! would be cool to get some recorded reactions from the kids. i would probably love a child's music critique as opposed to these pro's and bloggers. hope the club goes well i'll check the topic often and come back with some suggestions for music.

Re: Electronic Music Club

Well i once played some Mr Velcro Fasteners Lucky Bastard's Living Up North for kindergarteners. Boys really seemed to get the robot feel of it...

i hear you

Re: Electronic Music Club

At that age I used to really love some Art of Noise, you can talk about the fact that they use everyday life sounds to put it in electronic music, sampled voices put on a keyboard and played...

The kids love this one. I love it. I grew up listening to it. Did they show "Chavo del Ocho" in Europe?

Re: Electronic Music Club

let them discover on their own and bring it in.  dont be the knowitall teacher with exquisite taste that students hate.

Re: Electronic Music Club

I disagree. as a teacher I think its your duty to try and inspire... try and expose them to as much stuff as possible.

Re: Electronic Music Club

I think it's a great idea Marco. I'm 27 and one of my tutors at uni pretty much just shows us experimental music and film makers that he likes, each week, and it is my favourite class.
What about KLF & Yello? KLF are cool too because of their social philosophy and view on art and commercialism. But maybe you want more electro...

Music is a beautiful opiate, if you don't take it too seriously.

underground resistance

think its a cool project, marco. will be fun for you and the kids as well. im sure you will also learn some stuff from them. and probably also see some things in a different light afterwards.

Re: Electronic Music Club

Hi sorry for having taken so long to reply. Just had parents day today and had to present the club to the whole parent group as well as my subject area (French and Spanish).

Thanks all for the suggestions ... love the Herbie and Fairlight big_smile

@Cebteq ... you're right, being the know it all is no fun. The compilations were made in response to several students asking me what I listened to and also some younger ones not knowing what a compilation was. It was also a nice way of introducing the objective of the club (a compilation with their music).

@Zora: the kids have taken to the online music things I've shown like ducks to water. I was blown away by what they came up with on iNudge, this 13 year old girl created this incredible deep housey groove, I found out that she had done some piano and I could see how she used that to inform her composition

Alright will let you know how next week goes.

FYI: kids liked kraftwerk, galaxy toobin wink, freezepop, lindstrom and vitalic

Re: Electronic Music Club

So this week I brought in another bot's electribe to show the kids (One said it looked retro ... by their standard it probably is). Each programmed one sound and then some tweaked. Then they tried out hobnox audiotool

Re: Electronic Music Club

bring in a record and see if anyone knows what it is. seriously, my 10 year old daughter had a friend over the other day and she asked what all those black things were on the expedit

Some of them are pretty fast learners and amaze me. Others just want to beat the shit out of each other.

@ Dade ... I think that track would freak out their delicate little minds. They're just getting the hang of a 303 emulation big_smile

Re: Electronic Music Club

a bit of a combo of listening and music making would be interesting for the kids.
kraftwerk - and play keyboard, stylophone etc
early acid tracks - download rebirth, its now free
dubstep - online tools or fruityloops or something

other things like vinyl, cassettes, 4track.  if you could get your hands on a v. simple synth like a korg ms-10 they  would love it.  schools used to have them but maybe less so these days.
are you starting 'school of electro' mr schneebly?

Re: Electronic Music Club

I might get a record player from the physics teacher at the school, he's the sort of tech repository at the school smile
