Topic: Myanmar

I'm leaving in 308 hours towards thailand and cambodia, trip only last 3 weeks but have like 6 days left at the end for either phi phi or krabi or whatever.. Now me and my gf were just talkin about the possibilities of going to myanmar for 3 or 4 days.... What do you think? We're also planning to go there next year pretty soon for 4 weeks, but is it worth to do a hit and run of 3 days ?

Re: Myanmar

Myanmar is so fucking beautiful. I've been there 10 years ago, but friends of mine have been there 2 years ago with their daughter and also loved it.
Bagan is very nice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagan There are plenty other nice spots, but travelling in Myanmar is not so easy as in Thailand for example.
The military junta is continuing to ruin this country for years. Makes me so sad, every time I think of it.
I would definitely recommend a visit, but maybe not for only 3-4 days. You'll also need a visa, I think.
Of course you could just fly to Yangon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangon , the former capital (the junta bastards moved to Naypyidaw http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naypyidaw to prevent a revolution a few years ago) and visit the Shwedagon Pagoda http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shwedagon , which is quite impressing.
When I travelled there, you had to pay 5$ at every bigger temple to a military guy, but we often managed to sneak around them, as we didn't grant them one single cent. I encourage you to do same.
All I can say is go, go, go and visit this incredible country. it will get less beautiful every year, because this brainless junta nazis are keeping on to destroy and spoil all the tourist places with ugly hotel buildings and other shit, like golf courses, in hope to get some more money to support their rotten regime.

Re: Myanmar

Thanks for the reply! Also have my thoughts bout sponsoring the junta, doesnt seem right imo. Still not totally sure I go there this trip, doubt that it will be too short... ... ... Mmmmzzzz

Re: Myanmar

Of course you will support the junta a bit, when you travel there. But the people appreciate that somebody cares about them and they of course benefit too, when you spend your money there.
There is also a nice book by George Orwell called "Burmese Days"
And I found this, when I quicksearched for the title which I haven't remembered exactly:
