Topic: Macbeth M5N semi modular

I've long had eyes for the Macbeth M5N.
Hadn't heard a really good demo of it until...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jaOmyrm … re=related

I'm actually starting to think of selling off some kit to make it happen, but DAMN it's expensive!

The white one is still the illest but I hadn't seen the blue one until tonight...  Soso fresh!
Not that the colour is so important, but hey...  tell me this isn't sexy.

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

This one just went on Ebay. A whitey at a pretty awesome price. Way more than I have but this is a good price. Maybe you can snaggle free shipping to the T-dot.

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

Yeah but dude's in Canada so the whitey on Ebay would still be $500 US cheaper.

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

Are they actualy worth their price?

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

It's funny you didn't see these for sale forever and then all of a sudden I've seen like ten in the past three months. But I mean given the price of a 2600 it's a pretty good deal. Also being recently made it will be more reliable and supported.

Each video I've seen of one has been pretty decent.

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

What i don't understand if people buy such an expensive modular to do just some Substractive synthesis witch most times all their gear does anyways.

It is funny that you mention this. On an impulse buy figuring it'd be cheaper than any other modular of the same size, I bought this big modular (http://analogcustom.blogspot.com/2008/0 … dular.html) that these guys in Chile made off Ebay. And I started using it about a week ago after the convertor got here.

And I'm sitting there making leads and basses and having fun but then I was like "Everything modulates everything else...why I don't start making CRAZY shit?" So Saturday night (about 0430) when i had my epiphany I start  playing around with craziness. And am anxious to get going again tonight. I had the same thoughts. My Cat and 202 and ATC can make the monosynth sounds...it's time for CRAZY shit.

Here is the guy's description of the modular in his own words from the Ebay hard sell. Given the price I nearly peed my pants when I read it and instantly bought it. Realizing later that aside from the bottom row I had most of the top two rows covered with my other monosynths (Cat SRM, 202, ATC-1 w all filters). Albeit they're not modular.

But I don't care it sounds very raw and wonderful. Really great action with the envelopes and sequencer. Very tight crisp and clear sound. Have some Pomonas coming in the mail to replace the crappy (his own words) ones that he threw in.

"Features:

Row 1:

2 x VCOS (square w/PWM, sine, triangle, and saw) each with 5 CV controllers and glide.
2 x Mixers
1 x Moog type VCF, with 3 ins, and also a 1/4" in, 3 CV
1 x Multi mode filter (LPF, BPF, NPF,HPF) with 3 ins, 3 external CV and differentiated outputs.
1 x Dual VCA

Row2:

1 x Midi to CV (2 CV and 2 gate controls)
1 x Ring Mod/ S/H (with internal or external clock) / Noise generator (pink-white)
1 x LFO (5 waveforms, delay and reset)
1 x VC LFO (w/ random out, saw and square differentiated outputs) reaches almost 3 Khz
1 x DUAL ENV (2 separated ADSR) with gate and trigger
1 x DUAL TRANSIENT AR (2 separated AR with cycling possibilities, almost reaching 5 Khz)
1 x CV Phaser (incredible sounding, Jarr

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

What's the best way to get something from Pro Tools onto a file that's not too big to put up?

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

Export it as .wav and then convert it using iTunes or any other MP3 converter...

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

The new macbeth modules look and sound pretty amazing and probably a lot less than the M5N.

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

1300 dollar for a dual x-serie vco in euro.

So much for "a lot less"...

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

Too bad that white boy on eBay is gone.  I'm gonna have to sell that damn MachineDrum of mine and wait for the next one...

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

Really? But with that and the back end module you've got all the main feature of the M5N for only 2500 dollars or so in less space. Apparently there's also going to be an M5X as well..

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

I would got for something else when i get a modular.
Not something substractive inspired.

Any examples of non-subtractive modular stuff you'd recommend?

Re: Macbeth M5N semi modular

On the one hand, I kinda like the semi-normalized design.  Definitely not a flexible but with the new X-Series components, it's sound would be pretty hard to beat.

But I agree:  the MacBeth is not the most flexible or design and there are some REALLY esoteric modules out there for fully modular systems.  As far as that sort of thing goes, I'm a big fan of the Modcan B series -- http://modcan.com  -- mainly because I've played with them, met the guy behind Modcan, they are very well built and they sound GREAT!

Honestly tho...  even if I made out alright on the sale of my MachineDrum (which I wouldn't really miss) and sold my SH-5 (THAT would be tough!) I might STILL come up a couple hundred bucks short!

...and besides, as busy as things have been with the day job, I'd also need some sort of time machine to get into the studio enough to REALLY enjoy it!

When it comes to this sort of question, I tend to get more excited about some of the weird things you can do with Control Voltages and modulation sources.  For example, some of the stuff that Blacet makes like the Hex Zone and this sort of thing.

I'm having a brain freeze about some of the cool oscillators and other audio sources I've seen in the past tho...  some very cool shit out there.

Since we're all hanging out on "modular fantasy island", I'd have to add that my dream system would include a Jomox T-Resonator module...

Maybe we need another thread:  "Fantasy Frankenstein Modular System" or something...     smile
...but for now, it's back to the salt mine for me.    sad
